Branches, leaves and flowers.
This workshop we will concentrate on two different birds as well as creating their entire setting with background leaves, flowers and branches. Our aim is to complete two artworks as well as studies of different elements.
Our two birds will be King Parrots and Gang Gang cockatoos.
We will learn to draw the male and female of each species, as they are very different colours to each other.
King Parrots are beautiful brightly coloured birds with a gentle and cheeky personality. The male is red headed and dark green while the female has a green head. They are smooth feathered birds so we will learn to give a hint of feather texture as well as that ‘pattable’ smooth look.
Gang Gang cockatoos are comedians in the bird world. The male has a top knot of fine red feathers which always looks unruly. Drawing these overlapping spindly feathers will be a wonderful technique to learn. The females are grey with orange edged chest feathers. The distinct white edged feathering gives us the chance to learn about feather structure.
For their natural setting, we will learn to create the colourful and textured surfaces of the branches as well as the smooth smaller branches of our Gum tree. There are several different varieties of gum leaves which we will explore, from pale grey green to red edged dark green. For added colour, we will add in some Flowering gum flowers with their textured cups and fluffy filaments. We will draw them in their different phases, from a full bud to partially opened to fully opened.
For our background -we will have an option of also including-
background leaves in graphite
background sky/ out of focus leaves in watercolour pencil.
We will do studies of these background options and then you can include them into your artwork if you wish.
Beginners and advanced students are very welcome as Janet teaches in a step by step demonstration format, giving each student the opportunity to learn and improve their drawing skills.
Janet will supply references for the workshop.
