Still Life and Portrait subjects will be the focus of this workshop, from the quick sketch to more completed work – you have the choice. Students of any level are welcome as the challenges of these exciting subjects will inspire everyone.
Paul’s classes are well known for their relaxed and happy atmosphere, with demonstrations by the tutor each day. You may choose your own preferred subject matter; take on a different challenge each day, or work on an extended study for the 5 days – it’s up to you.
Born Melbourne 1956, Paul started painting in his early teens primarily influenced by the work of renowned Australian artist Sir William Dargie C.B.E. who was to become his friend and mentor. Since then Paul has made a 40-year full-time career of painting in the tradition of tonal impressionism, working mostly in oil.
Educated at Scotch College, Paul studied Fine Art at RMIT. He was awarded the Camberwell Travel Scholarship for European Study in 1986 and undertook an extensive private study under the guidance of several leading artists 1973-79. Paul has travelled widely, studying and painting in Europe on various occasions.
In this workshop, you can choose the subject that you want to concentrate on for the five days. Luminosity and light will be the focus while being equipped with technical know-how. For the portraits, you will be led through gaining a good likeness and on to mixing believable flesh colours as well as sculpting the form.
The pursuit of superior quality and technique is a high priority for Lyn Diefenbach whose work is imbued with a celebration of life. Her paintings cover a myriad of subject matter with her bold florals consistently receiving accolades nationally and internationally. Her ability to communicate her ideas has entrenched her as a respected and sought-after tutor, with teaching engagements globally and across Australia.

Using acrylics as watercolour.
In this workshop, students will work with the tutor to articulate their own vision and particular challenges. The intention is to meet each individual exactly where they are and to support them in the production of work in the classroom that expands their practice in a personal way. The format will lean heavily on individual instruction and will also include lecture and discussion and demonstrations of particular techniques. A step by step process will begin with a fast foundation painting and will end with final approach options that are easy to learn and thought-provoking. Unearth fresh and honest art inside yourself and learn to capture it with paint. Herman will teach you to find originality in your own work.
In this intense workshop over the five days, we will cover colour tone composition, brushes, different types of oil paint surface preparation to paint on, some painting of photos along with some plein air weather permitting. Learn to get the feeling of light in your paintings, impasto paint techniques, the planning of your painting is essential, and then critiquing the paintings at the finished stage to improve them.
Adventures in Acrylics art workshop with Patrick Carroll
If you want to create paintings that “look more real,” through the improvement of your drawing, this workshop is for you. Both deliberate form-building and gesture will be used to capture the subject’s character. You will be shown how to handle a paintbrush suitable for the painting you hope to achieve, along with covering the canvas with paint. Drawing techniques used in creating bold and vibrant paintings will be demonstrated, such as blocking-in, perspective, and establishing effective value and colour relationships in a painting.
Embracing the Unknown art workshop with Donald James Waters
The workshop will begin working with charcoal, developing line and tonal values. We will then focus on the progression of our initial technique through the contamination of the charcoal using white acrylic paint to complete a tonal painting.

Malcolm Carver: Simplifying detail in drawing and painting techniques helps to learn to see the light and shapes that will significantly improve you’re sketching and painting skills. Malcolm’s fresh and enlightened approach is designed to ensure a new direction in learning to see forms and shapes including an understanding of depth in perspective. Jacky Pearson: Watercolours are the most exciting and versatile of all the mediums. Beautiful light effects and flowing washes are achieved by loose and bold brush strokes and a good knowledge of control of pigment and water. Come along, have fun and brush up on your skills using a variety of subjects: mountains, dramatic skies, boats and water, trees and figures. Jacky will cover the three essential steps for creating a sense of space: atmospheric and linear perspective and stacking. Heidi Willis: Through extensive demonstrations, step by step tuition and guided hands-on learning, this workshop will explore painting realistic flowers in transparent watercolour and botanical style, with a focus on a selection from the beautiful Waratah, Rose and/or Eucalyptus as our subjects. As always, my workshops focus strongly on improving your overall watercolour techniques, with a goal of equipping you with sound knowledge, direction, confidence and strategy to tackle any subject independently following my course. Each of these focus areas allows us to explore a range of essential watercolour techniques such as working with washes, the more complex process of glazing (or layers of wash) and the intricate art of dry brushing; the foundations to managing this medium well. Jenni Kelly: This workshop will introduce students to an unorthodox approach to painting. Be prepared to scrape, spray, throw and roll paint; and leave brushes to last. Working with warm and cool colours as well as transparent colours for glazing, exploring some mediums, starting with the abstract to impressionism, students will be encouraged to unleash their untapped creativity without restriction. Enjoy demonstrations and Jenni’s individual guidance. You will leave with a newfound creative confidence and a greater understanding of managing acrylics. Donald James Waters OAM: The primary aims of this workshop are to learn to work with spontaneity, gain further artistic independence, the application of creative writing and to use your reference material as reference only. The workshop will begin working with charcoal, developing line and tonal values. We will then focus on the progression of our initial technique through the contamination of the charcoal using white acrylic paint to complete a tonal painting. DJW will teach you how to effectively seal the charcoal artwork to allow layers of coloured glaze to be applied over the abstracted black and white in order to explore implied mood through the application of a range of colours. We will then continue with this artwork as a foundation to insert additional layers of content using any reference but painting predominately from your imagination. Otto Kuster: Come and experience the fun of oil painting with palette knives. You can be an absolute beginner wanting to plunge into the art world and try out a painting class or be an experienced artist wanting to explore a new painting technique to enrich your practice. You will start with a blank canvas and end up with paintings to be proud of after five days of extensive tuition, with a tutor who will share all his talents gathered over many years as an oil painter and teacher. The Wow Factor – Portraits or Florals in oils

Leoni Duff: In this workshop, we will discover what makes an award-winning dramatic landscape and how to tell a compelling story. We will discover and use the design elements necessary to create a great composition and examine the techniques used by the great landscape painters of history; Turner, Sorolla, and the Impressionists. We will learn the important ‘know how’ to make the most of photographic references discovering what to include and what to leave out, how to correct errors in photos and how to exaggerate and emphasise for effect. Janet Matthews: Janet will focus on Fur and Australian animals this workshop. Each day will be a different animal, with a different kind of fur. We will be doing the Curly fur of a Koala, the Spiky fur and spines of an Echidna, the sleek wet fur of a Platypus and the soft fluffy fur of a Sugar Glider. Janet will teach the different colour pencil techniques and colour combinations needed for each fur. We will be doing a portrait of each animal with students being able to select one of them to do a full study, using the fifth day to complete that drawing. Book a place in Janet’s workshop here
Paul Margocsy: This workshop will show you the beauty and wonder of wildlife art. With the use of watercolour and other water-soluble mediums (e.g., gouache, pencil, ink, pastel, acrylic) it will enable you not only to paint feathers and fur but to paint attitude, character and photo quality about your subject. You will position your subject, paint the surrounding habitat and give a realistic look to your art. The composition is the main attribute of any painting and with this achieved the technique used will excite and enthrall not just the artist but the viewer. It is a fun course and a time to learn how to manage this medium and these wonderful natural creatures. The backgrounds and the “props” of wildlife art are essential when you are painting realism. Parkinson: In this workshop, we will produce a stunning enlarged
botanical study of a dahlia. It will show students how to produce
stunning effects in coloured pencil work, equal to that of
watercolour painting. They are easy to use and convenient to store
and replace and to take along on your travels. Coloured pencils can
be used alone or combined with graphite. Beginning with exploring
techniques such as layering and burnishing, along with accurate
colour matching skills, tonal rendering and composition will help
students to master this rewarding medium. A step-by-step botanical
portrait will be the focus of the workshop.
1: Will focus on developing the drawing that will be the basis
for the finished artwork and we will start to explore the basic
techniques we will be using.

Painting is a fun hobby that focuses your mind and delivers numerous health benefits. I offer you six benefits of painting as a hobby that promotes mental health and improves your quality of life.
1. Painting Promotes Creative Growth
Many people pigeonhole themselves in right-brain or left-brain boxes early in life and then use that conclusion to determine that is all they can be for the remainder of their lives. The practice of painting as a hobby comes most natural to creative, right-brain individuals.
Pursuing a hobby such as painting is not limited for the creative individuals, though. Logical left-brain people can stimulate and nurture their artistic growth by practising painting too. Kasey Sealy: was born in Forbes in 1961, Kasey began painting at the age of 17yrs in 1978, and has painted professionally since 1980.
He has had six solo exhibitions in London and represented at major London Art Fairs, such as ‘Olympia’ where a record price of 18,000 pounds was established for a major canvas in 2002.

There are many ways to learn a new medium or technique with all of the books, DVDs, magazines, and online classes, you would hardly ever have to leave your house. But, none of those less interactive sources will ever compare to attending live art workshops. With a varied list of mediums and tutors available, you can most likely find something just right for you here. Then, make your arrangements with that workshop in mind.
Benefits of Painting.
Art makes us more human; it helps us to communicate in a different, personal language. This type of connection is a great benefit for all people and mainly for those who have conditions with a lack of communication or problems expressing themselves such as shyness, autism and other disabilities.
Painting is an individual activity even in the workshop or classroom; the student enters his/her world, a world which is full of possibilities. The stimulus of the creative mind allows the student to positively isolate from reality, which provides a mental rest that lowers stress and generates relaxation and happy feelings. This is especially significant for people with aggression or nervousness conditions.
Working in a non-competitive, relaxed environment (the teacher plays a significant role here) will enable the student to come closer to greater personal achievements; this will strengthen his/her individuality and self-esteem. This is especially significant for people with co-dependency, traumatic conditions and seniors who need activities that can improve their autonomy.
Learning to hold and handle a brush and pencil will help regulate the hand movements and stimulate brain connections at the same time the skill is being developed. In older adults, painting helps them strengthen their fine motor skill.

Painting helps us to get distracted from our problems; it helps us take anguish out and transform it into something beautiful, which is given a title. This helps us identify the feelings and increase our expression capabilities. This is especially significant for people with nervousness, mental conditions (like schizophrenia) or people going through an emotional imbalance like a break-up who use the visual expression to achieve catharsis. Adults who learn to paint fight the fear to confront themselves, learn to persevere and are encouraged to create something that belongs only to them, a personal project, unique and enormously satisfying.
7. Brain Activity
Drawing and painting stimulate both the left and right brain hemispheres. The first deals with the rational, logic elements and the second one maximise our creativity and emotions. Painting is helpful during the growth and development stages of children as well as in adulthood when it is invaluable in fighting illnesses like Alzheimer. Painting boosts imagination; the imagination of Alzheimer patients, whose memory starts to vanish, is strengthened.
8. Emotional Intelligence
Emotions are part of the creative world we all have inside. Making those emotions flow through painting helps create harmony between the heart and mind, which leads us to experiment happiness, love, empathy and peace. Within this chaotic world we live, the visualisation and relaxation that we obtain through painting are tools that in the long run, benefit our emotional, organic, energetic and spiritual being.

Come and experience the fun of oil painting with palette knives. You can be an absolute beginner wanting to plunge into the art world and try out a painting class or be an experienced artist wanting to explore a new painting technique to enrich your practice. You will start with a blank canvas and end up with paintings to be proud of after five days of extensive tuition, with a tutor who will share all his talents gathered over many years as an oil painter and teacher.

This workshop will explore a range of Still Life, Portrait, and Landscape subjects. Students of any level will rise to the challenges of these exciting subjects. They will love the relaxed and happy atmosphere that Paul’s classes are renowned for.

Please Note that the start day for the 2019 school is a Saturday, whereas we usually start on a Sunday, this is because of the Easter Holidays beginning on April 19th, 2019. This will give students of the workshops who travel from afar enough time to be home for Easter.
Vibrant Landscapes, Streetscapes & Marinescapes in Oils
In this workshop, you will learn the steps necessary that will assist you in the making of a great painting. Our painting will be alla prima [wet into wet], and we will start with three simple, essential lines that will be the backbone of the initial drawing.

To be eligible for this discount you must pay a deposit of $150.00 plus a $4.32 PayPal fee to reserve your place in the workshop, and the discount of $200.00 will be applied to the total of your official invoice issued by the office.

Our standard fee structure for a single registration has three price levels and is as follows:
To be eligible for seniors or concession rates you will need to enter the relevant number at the checkout when filling in your application.
Progressive payments are acceptable. The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. CANCELLATIONS: Organizers reserve the right to limit class sizes and cancel the workshops should minimum enrolments not be reached three weeks before the commencement of the school.
Should you not wish to transfer to another workshop you will receive a refund of all monies paid.
Your application is non-transferable.
Unless explicitly stated on registration material students cancelling before Friday, February 23, 2018, will forfeit $150.00 of all monies paid.
Students cancelling after Friday, February 23, 2018, are not eligible for any refunds.
Students cancelling after the stated deadline will still be held responsible for outstanding amounts on their invoice.
Refunds will not be available for attendees who choose not to attend a workshop.
Cancellations will be accepted in writing only and must be received by the stated cancellation deadline. All refund requests must be made by the attendee and must include the name of the attendee or invoice number.
