If you want to create paintings that “look more real,” through the improvement of your drawing, this workshop is for you. Both deliberate form-building and gesture will be used to capture the subject’s character. You will be shown how to handle a paintbrush suitable for the painting you hope to achieve, along with covering the canvas with paint. Drawing techniques used in creating bold and vibrant paintings will be demonstrated, such as blocking-in, perspective, and establishing effective value and colour relationships in a painting. Simplification, editing, and overworking will be addressed. There will be a demonstration concerning how to effectively “start” a painting. Using the medium of acrylics to create drawings that will become paintings they will demonstrate believable perspective, form and depth. Patrick will provide clear, hands-on instruction about creating dynamic compositions, mixing colours, paint application methods, creating depth, warm and cool colours, and using different brushes and tools to create realism through the use of textures. There is nothing better than putting your brain away and letting your eyes tell you how to paint. Come with a desire to have a creative fun filled 5 days with Patrick in this workshop. Open to all comers, 18 years and over
Born in Bathurst in 1949, Patrick Carroll has been practising as a professional artist since 1974. His work is held in numerous private and corporate collections in Australia, UK, Japan, USA, Europe and New Zealand. Patrick is an exuberant, intuitive artist who has been painting and exhibiting for over 30 years. His work is forceful, supported by fine draughtsmanship and traditional painting techniques. He has a love of the landscape, the bush, the hills and the city. This basic landscape as a narrative is balanced by his expressive execution and used as a platform to play out the act of painting. His bold and vibrant painting style is infused with personality and has a bravado and defiance that reflects his drive and dedication. Patrick’s thorough enjoyment of painting is evident through the essence and grandeur reflected in his confident brushstrokes and dramatic colours. Describing himself accurately as a “contemporary realist”, he is not constrained by formalist or academic approaches to colour mixing or its application, and his choice of subject matter allows him the freedom to explore and exploit the actual living plastic qualities of the paint itself to the very expressionist ends he needs to reach a balance between the emotional content and the work’s inner narrative.
