Kate Nolan BSc, Grad Dip Ed, Grad Dip Vis Art is a natural history artist based in Melbourne, Victoria.
Orchids are a fascinating and unique group of plants. They look quite different to most other flowers and can make a fantastic subject in botanical art because of their spectacular shapes and beautiful and unusual colouring. They are wonderful fun to draw and paint but do pose particular problems which need to be carefully resolved. In this course we will aim to use these orchids to create some really special artwork. Over the week Kate will teach you:
” The anatomy of Orchids and how this differs to normal flowers.
” How to draw Orchids in an accurate way which also maximises their unique shape and appeal.
” How to observe and record light and shade.
” How to deal with particular problems such as white petals.
” Watercolour techniques: how and when to use different techniques and how to mix and match correct colours.
Each attendee will leave this session with:
New artwork and drawings,
An understanding of Orchids as a botanical art subject and the particular art problems they pose and how to solve these.
Learned or reinforced techniques and theories about watercolour painting and botanical drawing. This workshop is open to students 18 years and over with some prior experience in realist watercolour painting. Those with experience in botanical art will gain the most.
Kate did a Science degree majoring in botany at Melbourne University, then a graduate diploma in visual art at Newcastle University and a Diploma in Education. She then worked as a scientific illustrator at the Museum of Victoria for a number of years before moving to freelance. Kate has painted and taught natural history illustration including much botanical art for over twenty-five years. Most of her teaching and exhibition has been at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Melbourne and Sydney but she has also produced much work for publishers, the Museum of Victoria and has worked with many other organisations and private groups. Because of her scientific training Kate’s work is scientifically accurate and she balances this with aesthetic appeal.
An enduring love for the natural world has inspired all Kate’s work and she seeks to inspire others likewise, as well as to maintain scientific interest and practise traditional artistic values to the highest standard. She has won various awards including an Honourable Mention for the Celia Rosser Medal.
Kate Nolan is an award-winning natural history artist and tutor based in Melbourne. She completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at Melbourne University, enjoying the science and the mental challenge, but feeling that she needed a bit of art in her life. So Kate then studied a Graduate Diploma in Visual Art at Newcastle University majoring in Plant and Wildlife Illustration. This was a wonderful year spent combining her science training with art and observation and depiction of plants and animals. She also completed a Diploma of Education then worked at Melbourne Museum drawing very interesting little marine creatures for a few years, before freelancing as an illustrator for publishers. Kate now teaches and exhibits regularly in Melbourne and interstate. In her artwork she strives to maintain scientific accuracy and to balance this with aesthetic values. So she aims always to create striking, beautiful, interesting and accurate artwork. In all her courses Kate helps students to achieve their personal best in relation to their art. She is happy to help students of all ages and abilities in any aspect of their art with as much personal attention as she can give to each. Kate feels that art is a journey which is completely personal and that this journey is one to take the time to enjoy fully in all its ups and downs. Art is the expression of this journey and technique is there to support the art, so Kate gives as much tuition on technique as she can in each class as well as trying always to gently remind people of the importance of the journey.
Kate draws inspiration from nature wherever she travels. She feels that by portraying natures fascinating intricacy, she can express the importance of the connections humans have with nature.
