‘A Painter’s Paradise’
Travelling to another country to paint and draw is a unique opportunity; to be stimulated and inspired by an unfamiliar landscape. Capturing an essential quality and sense of place will be an important issue during the workshop. Escape to the Hawkes Bay area of New Zealand’s North Island with Judith White for an inspiring five day workshop, exploring the landscape around Wallingford Homestead. One of the aims of the workshop will be to try and foster your own sense of connection to the environment and personal experience. Each day will be structured with painting and drawing ideas based on the logistics of travel and painting. You will deal with the problems and advantages of working plein-air. How and what you choose to paint or draw will be discussed on a one to one basis, so that each participant will have a sense of their own space within the landscape. Wallingford Homestead has a great deal of historical visible points which will afford you a wonderful opportunity to create something special to add to your portfolio. The materials list will be compact, flexible and portable using acrylic, gouache or watercolour as the basic pigments. How to gather subject reference and painting ideas in the field will be an important catalyst to more formal painting projects in the studio.

Flying from Australia: I suggest Air New Zealand to Wellington and onto Napier. By using this suggestion, you will be able to book luggage through to Napier. The International and Domestic Airports are all in the one building. Air New Zealand appears to be generous with luggage, depending on which price you select. The same applies to the return flight. This may mean a night in Wellington prior to and after the Art Retreat.
If necessary you can travel to and from Australia in the one day using Air New Zealand, be careful that you allow enough time to catch the Wellington to Napier flight.
