“The Passage of Light in Pastel”
Three major subjects Still life, Portraiture and Landscape in pastel. We shall be studying the passage of light across these subjects following Tonal Impressionism, which is about understanding how and what we see reduced to its most simple form. An extra element of Precious Leaf will be incorporated into portrait images to make each individual work something special.
Day 1 & 2 -Still life
Two days spent on your own unique still life. Decide what it is that is close to your heart at the moment and bring those things along. (At least 3 objects) The image alone should sustain your interest for the next two days which will be about learning what it is that you really see. The Passage of Light across Objects on Surface, and the Shadows and Reflections that are revealed by this study
We shall be considering Placement, Lighting, Composition, Line, Form, Colour and above all Tone.
Day 3 –Landscape A day of excitement and variety.
Partly spent painting en plein air in the morning if weather permits and in the afternoon we shall continue our work using photographs and discussing the use of photography and how best it can be used successfully within our work.
Day 4 –Portraiture
Hone the skills picked up in the previous three days and apply them to what is considered “The Highest Principle”
Pastel is perfect for portrait. One day of portrait painting using a live model and the second day we will continue using iPad or laptops or A4 photograph printouts of the previous days’ image. We will be extending these images by using iridised leaf, or you may prefer to bring in a favourite photo of a loved one, and create your own iconic work using pastel and leaf. For those not interested in portraiture this day can be used as an extension to the still life or Landscape.
Day 5 This day will be spent finishing and refining the skills learned during the previous 4 days for each student’s particular favourite subject. All lessons within the classroom will be accompanied by regular demonstrations. The model fee will be included in the requirement list. Open to allcomers 18 years and over.
